Non-Structural BMPs for Stormwater Compliance

In addition to structural Best Management Practices (as discussed in the previous blog post), we will also discuss the other category that BMPs can fall into: Non-structural.

Non-structural BMPs

Non-structural BMPs include managing stormwater runoff through land use planning techniques, policies, and other non-physical means. These BMPs can include:

  • Good housekeeping practices – regularly scheduled sweeping paved areas to remove sediment and debris, regularly refreshing dumpsters and concrete washouts
  • Properly storing materials and having spill prevention plans in place
  • Preserving natural vegetation, including riparian buffers, to help prevent runoff into waterways
  • Training and education – ensuring teams are knowledgeable about stormwater compliance and its importance

There are many non-structural Best Management Practices available, and understanding which practices are appropriate for your project can be just as important as selecting physical structural controls. To help simplify the process, our team has developed a free downloadable BMP Guide that highlights common non-structural BMPs and how they support effective stormwater management.

Our compliance experts can also help evaluate your site, identify the most effective non-structural practices, and incorporate them into a comprehensive Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP). Download the free BMP Guide or contact our team for guidance tailored to your project’s specific needs.
